Drunken drivers and speeders on Spartanburg County highways will soon have something else to worry about besides the Highway Patrol.   Sheriff Larry Smith stated, “We should have the radar in the cars by the end of the month, but we’re going to go ahead and put the men out on the highways.”  “We hope to make enough of a difference with two men the first year to show the state that the potential to make highways safer is there,” said Lt. New Sheriff in Town-Chuck Wright
Defeated 71 year old Democratic candidate John “Jack” Owens, with a final vote count of  66,670 to 27,687 according to unofficial results. Wright won nearly 71% of the vote, fought a close race in the June Primary with the four-term incumbent Sheriff Bill Coffey; turning a 64-vote deficit into a win 2 weeks later in the run-off for the Republican Nomination.  (Spartanburg Herald-Journal  November 3rd, 2004)
