E.O.W.

FEBRUARY 27, 2007

Deputy Kevin Carper was shot and killed during a foot pursuit of a suspect who fled during a traffic stop. The driver of the vehicle fled on foot as soon as Deputy Carper attempted to stop him on Midway Park Drive shortly after 10:00PM, February 27th, 2007.

A struggle ensued when Deputy Carper caught the suspect. The man produced a .38 caliber handgun and shot Deputy Carper twice. One round was stopped by his vest but the second round entered one of the vest's armholes, causing a fatal wound to the chest. The assailant was shot by Deputy Carper and a second deputy. The killer was transported to a local hospital where he died a short time later.

Deputy Carper had served with the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office for approx. 12 years. He is survived by his wife and three daughters.

On January 11th, 2008 the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office received a letter of support requesting assistance with a community project. This community project entails the erection of a memorial monument to be placed at the bridge site near where Deputy Carper was killed. Thirteen year old Girl Scout, Brittany Jackson, worked diligently with a local Representative Scott Talley to see this community project to honor Spartanburg County Sheriff's Deputy Kevin Carper by having the bridge at I-85 and Hwy. 129 named for him.

This monument (approx. 4ft.x 6ft) will serve as a permanent recognition of how much we appreciate Deputy Carper's service to our community. The total cost of this monument is approx. $6,000.00 A Kevin Carper Memorial fund has been set up at the BB & T in Duncan, SC. Contributions are welcome.

The Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office appreciate's the effort and work by Brittany Jackson to see this memorial to its completion.

Thank you, Brittany!
